A graduate in architecture from MacKenzie University in Sao Paulo, Percival Lafer joined the family business Lafer & Co in the 1960s. In charge of design and product development. His obsession was, therefore, innovation. Each design had to reflect the state of the art technology applied to innovative ideas. Each drawing had to be original, different and therefore patentable.
The company was renamed Lafer MP (Moveis Patenteados). The fiberglass department was the first to be created in and for the furniture industry, but it opened up many other prospects, telephony (Big Ears phone), automobiles, etc ... Percival Lafer devoted most of his time creating new products. He could not give free rein to his passion for architecture because of his total dedication to the family business, but he nevertheless designed many remarkable homes for his personal friends. His passion of deconstructing and rebuilding cars, cultivated since childhood, first with toys and then in reality, will lead to the creation in 1975 of the MP Lafer, a two-seater fiberglass car that will be a great success.
He is the most prolific Brazilian furniture designer from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s, still remaining unknown in the United States despite the examples of his work for sale today on furniture design sites. With lustrous leather trim and meticulous detailing, Lafer pieces have also been in great demand in Western Europe and Scandinavia.
