Series of three books "The Iliad, new Translation dedicated to the King", "Complete Works of Homer," by M.Gin advisor to the Grand Council, in Paris at Servière, bookseller rue Saint-Jean de Beauvais, vintage 1784 late eighteenth century.
These books are in good condition, they are in their own juice. It lacks the Volume 3. They are illustrated with many engravings depicting mythological scenes from the life of Homer.
A note: traces of restoration (the prints were glued to the pages), some stand out, the paper is yellowed, pitted and stained in places, see photos.
Epic of ancient Greece attributed to Homer. The Iliad is composed of fifteen thousand three hundred thirty-seven dactylic hexameters and since the Hellenistic period, divided into twenty-four books. The text was probably written between 850 and 750 BC. AD (dates already mentioned by Herodotus), four centuries after the period to which historians are matching the mythical war he relates. The theme of the epic is the Trojan War in which the Achaeans clash from all over Greece and the Trojans and their allies, each side being supported by various deities such as Athena, Poseidon and Apollo. After a siege of ten years, the fortunes of war still hesitant in fighting multiple group or individual which illustrate figures like Ajax, Hector and Patroclus. Finally the Achaeans prevail thanks to the victory of Achilles killing Trojan leader in single combat.
