* The Critical reflections on poetry and painting are a work of art theory, literature theory and music theory by Jean-Baptiste Dubos published for the first time in 1719 and often republished since. They tackle questions that were little studied in his time: the nature of aesthetic enjoyment, the different condition of the different arts and their respective power, the part that physical causes can have in the development of genius, in the character of works and in the literary brilliance of certain eras, the art of judging in aesthetic matters and the competence of criticism.
Father Jean-Baptiste Dubos (1670 -1742) is a French clergyman, diplomat and historian.
