To report :
Scottish academic and historian, was principal of the University of Edinburgh for thirty years. Born in Brothwick (Midlothian), he studied at Dalkeith and then at the University of Edinburgh (theology). First a Presbyterian pastor of Gladsmuir (1743), he then took over the leadership of the parishes of Lady Yester and Greyfriars in Edinburgh, where he distinguished himself in preaching. Partisan whig, he enlisted in 1745 in the militia to protect Edinburgh from the Jacobites of Charles Édouard Stuart. In charge of a large family, he lived for a long time in embarrassment, but, having successively obtained the places of ordinary chaplain of the king, principal of the college of Edinburgh and historiographer of Scotland, he ended up enjoying the ease . We have him: History of Scotland under Mary and Jacques VI, London, 1759 / History of Charles V, 1769 / History of America, 1777 / Historical researches on India, 1790.
