Black Forest * carved wooden jewelry box representing two birds face to face, one brooding on its nest, below a fox watching them, all among flowers and foliage, XIXth century.
This box is in good condition. We have his key, which is stuck in the lock.
A note: the interior fabric is a little torn and worn, some old worm holes on the wood, some slight accidents and old lack of wood on the decorations (leaf edge ...), the leaf behind the bird on the right has been glued (not very visible), some wear of time, see photos.
The Black Forest carved wooden objects do not originate in Germany but were made in the region of Brienz, Switzerland. The tradition of woodworking is ancestral in this region, the inhabitants perpetuate the practice of carved wood on the facades of houses, furniture or everyday objects. The sculptors excel in particular in the representation of wild animals in their natural environment. In the 19th century, these naturalistic sculptures of the black forest became very fashionable and very popular.
