* The Consulate is a political regime of France from the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire (November 9, 1799) until the proclamation of the First Empire on May 18, 1804 by Napoleon Bonaparte. The Constitution of Year VIII then established an authoritarian regime headed, in theory, by three consuls. It was actually headed by the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte, who became consul for life in 1802. The Consulate followed the Directoire regime (1795-1799) and lasted until the end of the First French Republic.
