* The Russian craft is deeply inspired by the sacred art of the icon. After the 1917 revolution, many of these artists had to "convert". They then began to create miniature lacquer and lacquer boxes. There is thus in Russia 4 schools producing lacquered boxes: Palech, Fedoskino, Mstera and Holoui (names of cities). Boxes to be painted are made of porous cardboard, glued with paste and then dried. After being painted, they are then ready to be decorated by the artist. This first paint the subject or subjects and then apply the gilding. Finally, the work will be covered with 7 to 8 layers of lacquer and after prolonged drying, is polished. These little boxes of various shapes are decorated with mythological scenes from Russian fairy tales, scenes of everyday life, landscapes ... etc. (Source: website russie.net)
