Bronze sculpture (bronze patina) representing an angel protecting a young child by crushing a snake of his foot, symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary victorious Evil, signed Brian elder * and founder E.Quesnel **, vintage nineteenth century.

French sculptor, older brother of the sculptor Jean Louis Brian, Joseph Brian follows the classes of the drawing school of his hometown. In 1827, he moved to Paris and became a pupil of Bosio. He obtained the second prize of sculpture, in 1829, with Hyacinthe overthrown and killed by the puck of Apollo. He moved to Rome, Villa Medici for two years (1832-1833), as a boarder of the government (without winning the Prix de Rome). It begins at the Salon of 1836 (Eve). He receives from the state the order of two busts, executes a statue for the former City Hall of Paris (Guillaume Budé) and realizes, in collaboration with his younger brother Louis, a statue of Jean Althen. He is also the author of the genius of Peace, for the Louvre Palace (Rotonde d'Apollon).

figure among the most important French founders of the first two thirds of the nineteenth century. In 1826, the foundry Louis Richard and the chisel-smith Edouard Quesnel joined forces to create a factory specialized in the creation of bronzes for furniture, clocks and bronzes of art. The business was dissolved in 1836. Quesnel continued his activity and set up his workshop at 22, rue des Amandiers-Popincourt. The trademark Quesnel et Cie appeared in 1844 and at that time the founder worked on the publishing of works by Pradier and Duret. The revolution of 1848 ruins him and his son takes the direction of the workshop. The Magasin Pittoresque of 1858 still mentions the Quesnel enterprise among the principal modern founders (see E. Charton, Le Magasin pittoresque, XXVIst year, 1858, Paris, p.387)
