Sculpture in bronze black patina representing a bench of swordfish or marlins bounding, signed WA Lovegrove *, founder Susse Freres Paris **, on a base of frosted glass and glass granite, from the twentieth century.

This sculpture is in good condition and is of high quality. She is signed see photos. It is placed on the pedestal.

* William A. Lovegrove (1902-1970):

Artist and diplomat, William A. Lovegrove was born in New York on March 21, 1902. His studies in the fine arts began in Paris at a young age. In addition to a graduate degree from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he also studied sculpture at the Sorbonne and the Ecole du Louvre. His sculpted works were exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and in New York at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Grand Central Art Galleries. Lovegrove enlisted in the US Army in June 1942. His work with the MFAA began in 1945 when he was stationed in Paris with the SHAEF mission in France in conjunction with the Recovery Commission. He organized the exhibition Les Chefs-d'œuvre des Collections Privées Françaises Retrouves in Germany, whose French works of art were stolen by the Nazis and recovered by the Monuments Men. The exhibition was successfully presented at the Jeu de Paume in Paris from June to August 1946. For its help in the restoration of French art, Lovegrove received the Légion d'Honneur by the French government. Lovegrove remained in Europe as head of museums and libraries for the Allied Military Government for Stuttgart from 1948 to 1949. He then began a long career with the United States Information Agency (USIA), which included His mission as cultural agent in Germany until 1955. During the following decade, he served as cultural attaché in the United States in places around the world. He was based in Cairo from 1955 to 1960, in Athens until 1961, in Washington, until 1963 and finally in Vienna from 1963 to 1966. After his retirement from the USIA in 1966 he remained in Vienna As Secretary of the American International School and Consultant at the 1969 Vienna Festival. The following year he became Executive Secretary of the European Council of International Schools. Lovegrove and his wife, Isolde Oden, were part of an elite circle of friends, including George Balanchine, John Steinbeck and Julia Child. Bill Lovegrove died in Lausanne, Switzerland, on April 25, 1970. (See monumentsmenfoundation.org)

** The company Susse frères:

The company Susse frères was founded in 1758, in Paris, originally a stationery business, it gained its nobility in the foundry of art. The two brothers Susse, Nicolas and Victor, began by selling small bronzes in their stationery at the Passage des Panoramas. There is a trace of their new activity of founders of art in 1839, they publish a small catalog of their production. It was their first important contract with a renowned sculptor, James Pradier, who launched their company in 1841. In 1847, they used the reduction method Sauvage which allows the realization of small bronzes of furnishing reproducing famous works. Under the Second Empire, the house thrived thanks to numerous artists completing its catalog. Nicolas and Victor being deceased, it is Albert Susse who continues the activity, relying on two stores of sale in Paris. A third, will open in the 1900s at 13 Boulevard de la Madeleine. Today it is the oldest active art foundry in France and has been awarded the Living Heritage label.
