* The makila

or makhila is a walking stick lined with a weapon belonging to Basque culture and tradition. The makila (from Latin bacilli) is the walking stick of the Basque and not a shepherd's stick, which was usually given to the teenager to mark his entry into the adult world. The makila is a customary personal item whose length must be adapted to the size of the person. It can also be offered as a sign of honor. The makila is made up of several elements: The clover is a steel point; the stick is in medlar; the ferrules are made of different metals; the handle is wrapped with braided leather straps or all metal; the strap is made of leather; horn or hammered metal knob; by unscrewing this handle, the weapon is discovered, made of a steel point; the bottom ends with a clover. The makila carries, engraved, the name of its owner, a proverb or a symbol.
