This lamp appeared as early as the Middle Ages, but the apogee of its use is in the nineteenth century and is found in all countries bordering the Rhine. Placed above the table of the meal, it is lit on Friday evening at sunset by the mistress of the house who approaches her hands in order to feel the heat of the flames, and covers her eyes before reciting a blessing.
