Murano glass is renowned worldwide for its unique colouring and processing, and is the hallmark of Venetian glassworks. Many of the important characteristics of Venetian glassware had been developed by the 13th century. Towards the end of that century, the centre of the Venetian glass industry moved to the island of Murano. Murano glassmakers maintained their monopoly on the production of quality glass for centuries, developing and refining many techniques, such as crystals, enamel, gold-thread ornaments, multicoloured glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones in glass. Today, Murano artisans still use these centuries-old techniques.
