* In Greek mythology, Asclepius is in the Homeric epic a Thessalian hero then, in the classical period, the god of medicine. Son of Apollo, he died struck down by Zeus for having raised the dead, before being placed in the sky as the constellation Ophiuchus. It corresponds to the Roman Aesculapius, whose name is a Latin translation of the Greek alphabet god, and the Egyptian Imhotep. Its main attribute is the staff of Asclepius, around which is wrapped a snake, now a symbol of medicine.
