In 1908, Ernest CHARLES took over the Maison ULLMANN, Bronzier. The company, then located at 103 rue de Turenne in Paris, specialized in the reproduction of antique lighting fixtures, thus building a reputation within the profession of artistic bronzier. In 1920, Emile Albert CHARLES, his eldest son, took over the company and in 1932 Emile CHARLES joined forces with his brother Pierre. The company was then called CHARLES Frères. In 1959, Emile CHARLES was joined by his 2 sons: - Jean CHARLES, Major of the BOULLE school interior architecture and wood sculpture section. - Jacques CHARLES, graduate of Applied Arts in Interior Architecture. From 1960 the "Charles lamps" were born. Emile-Albert CHARLES and his two sons, Jean and Jacques, created the "CHARLES Style" combining classicism, rigor and current events; a new approach in the field of lighting and decoration. These are the famous lamps: ANANAS, EPI DE MAIS, POMME DE PIN, LOTUS, VASE MEDICIS ... In 1960, the CHARLES Family took over Maison FARGETTE and settled at 16 rue du Parc Royal, in the Marais, thus perpetuating a very rich collection of Style. The family, already assisted by Jean's wife, Chrystiane CHARLES, created the most emblematic elements of the Collection, and signed a new style in the field of lighting and decoration: these are the famous lamps Ananas, Mais, Pomme de PIN, Lotus, Vase Médicis ... 1965, Creation of the INOX and Lacquers Line. The organ pipe lamps achieved great success and became an aesthetic reference of this period. In 1970, death of Jean, Jacques and Emile CHARLES. In 1971, Chrystiane CHARLES, Jean's wife and a Gold Medalist sculptor from the Fine Arts School, took over as Artistic Director of Maison CHARLES and created the Collection that bears her name. Taking over the family business, Chrystiane CHARLES offers a Collection of signed and numbered lamp-sculptures, contemporary in style and inspired by nature: AMARYLLIS, ALIZEE, ORCHIDEE, TULIPS...
