* The Order of the Holy Spirit was, during the two and a half centuries of its existence, the most prestigious order of chivalry in the French monarchy. It was on December 31, 1578, in the midst of the religious wars, that Henry III founded the “order and militia of Benedict Saint-Esprit”. Abolished in 1791 during the French Revolution, the Order of the Holy Spirit was then restored in 1814. The order was definitively abolished by Louis-Philippe I in 1830.
