Inro * 5 compartments gilt lacquered on one side representing two characters in a flowery landscape; on the other, birds (herons) near a tree branch, signed inside the cover, from Japan, XIXth century.

This inro is in good condition. It is signed see photos. It lacks the netsuke.

A note: small accidents see red arrows, wear time on lacquer, well look at photos.

* The inro

Literally "basket of stamps' are small boxes from Japan with utilitarian purpose. The inro are among the objects called sagemono (hanging objects) and are worn only by men. Kimono having no pocket, they are holding on to the belt of the kimono (obi called) by a cord, for storing different things. This string is inserted between the belt and clothing. So it does not fall, a cleat, usually a netsuke, it blocks the upper edge of the obi. They are formed compartments which fit on each other. The number of compartments can vary from 1 to 7, more cover. The individual components are joined together by a cord. The inro are usually made of wood, bamboo or woven from bamboo strips. They are embellished with numerous decorations carved lacquer. Two families of artists lacquerers Edo produced between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, the most outstanding pieces. Note, however, that the inro are rarely signed. Today, inro became valuable and expensive collectibles.
