Pair of plaster sculptures (terracotta color) representing two women dressed in antique style sitting near urns and lamenting, based on the "Cleureuse" statuettes by Clodion* preserved in the Louvre, from the 19th century.

These statuettes are in good general condition. Signed on the side M. Clodion and DOM on the urns (like the originals). The originals date from 1766 and are kept at the Louvre Department of Sculptures of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Modern Times (RF 1826 and 1827).

Note: breaks on one hand (missing a finger, glued thumb?), some small chips and missing plaster, slight accidents and wear over time, see photos.

* Claude Michel known as Clodion

Born December 20, 1738 in Nancy and died March 29, 1814 in Paris, was a sculptor from Lorraine , then from 1766 French. He undoubtedly spent the beginning of his life in Nancy and Lille. In 1755, he entered the Paris workshop of his maternal uncle Lambert Sigisbert Adam , sculptor. He stayed there for four years, then became a student of Jean-Baptiste Pigal upon the death of his uncle. It is known for its mythological groups of dancers, nymphs and terracotta bathers. He also executed works of large proportions, notably " Hercules at rest ", " the Scamander River ", " the Flood ", a bust of Tronchet, etc. He is the author of the "aquatic" decor of the Château de Digoine.
