Son of Charles the Simple and Hedwig of Wessex, is a king of the Franks (936-954) of the Carolingian dynasty. After the suspension in 922 of his father King Charles the Simple, his mother and Prince Louis, two years old, took refuge in England (hence his nickname Overseas), at the court of his grandfather maternal Edward the Elder, and that of his uncle Aethelstan, kings of Wessex. Become the Carolingian heir by the death in captivity of Charles III (929), it is recalled to England by the powerful Marquis of Neustria Hugh the Great to succeed the king Raoul died in early 936, which then marks the return of the Carolingian dynasty. Once in power, Louis d'Outremer wants to get away from Hugh the Great Duke of the Franks and became second personality of the kingdom after the king. The council of Ingelheim (948) allows the excommunication of the Duke of the Franks and the final release of Louis IV. From the year 950, King is increasingly recognized in the Northeast of his kingdom by building many loyalties. He died accidentally from a fall from a horse between Laon and Reims in 954.
