**L'Houmeau is an important district in the history of the city of Angoulême. It is located in the lower part of the city, on the banks of the Charente.
Around the 12th century, the population of L'Houmeau, mainly made up of fishermen, was gathered around the Church. He was the fish supplier for the upper town. The port of l'Houmeau was founded in 1280. We can say that it was strategically located, at the terminus of navigation on the Charente, where the main roads of national importance meet.
Among the five suburbs existing at the time (St-Cybard, l'Houmeau, la Bussatte, St-Martin, St-Ausone), l'Houmeau was the most important in 1789 in terms of population. Indeed, in the 17th and 18th centuries, it experienced a remarkable boom with strong growth along the main routes, especially towards the north. Around 1650, the inhabitants were mainly in the "Traverse de l'Houmeau" (now rue de Paris).
