* The term Dormition is used, in Christian vocabulary, to designate the death of saints and the pious faithful when it is not a violent death. This term applies more particularly to the death of Mary, Mother of Jesus. The Dormition of the Mother of God is often called simply Dormition because it is the Dormition par excellence. The Eastern Churches have kept this ancient name in the form of The Dormition of the Theotokos (the Mother of God). They thus hear the death of the Virgin Mary and the ascent to heaven of her body. The Feast of the Dormition is the most important of the feasts of the Virgin Mary, one of the Twelve Great Feasts, and it is she who closes the liturgical year of the Byzantine rite. As with Catholics, it takes place on August 15.
