* Faustin Besson (1821-1882) (Ecus.)

He began his training in the studio of his father, the sculptor Jean Séraphin Désiré Besson, first curator of the municipal museum of Dole, and director of the free drawing school, where he also taught architecture, painting and sculpture . He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1840 under the direction of Guillaume Descamps and Adolphe Brune, while following the workshop of the bisontin Jean Gigoux. His career was marked by a rapid rise in the Parisian artistic milieu, especially after the advent of the Second Empire, where his virtuoso style met with strong adhesion in official circles. In this capacity he experienced an intense decorating activity with the great Parisian aristocracy, responding also to the prestigious imperial orders of Napoleon III (the Tuileries, Saint-Cloud). Besson realized many rural scenes in the line of Jean-François Millet, but also the decoration of the room of Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace, a ceiling of a room of the old hotel of Jean Charpentier at 76 rue du Faubourg- Saint-Honoré in Paris and many pastiches in the style of the eighteenth century then in fashion. He was also awarded a ceiling in the private mansion of his friend, Doctor Barré, in Thouars (Deux-Sèvres), now the Henri-Barré museum.
