*Robert and Jean Cloutier

twin brothers born in 1930 in Paris, died respectively in 2008 and 2015, are French ceramists and sculptors who pooled their means and their production until the death of the first of them, hence their usual name of Cloutier brothers. The career of the “ceramics twins” was long and prolific: after their training at the Meaux Ceramic School, where they also learned the stucco technique, they were apprentices in the workshops of experienced Parisian ceramists: at Lafourcade, at Georges Jouve for Robert, where he was entrusted with the mascarons, at Michel Rivière for Jean; then they are hired by Pol Chambost. In 1955, they opened their own ceramic workshop at 53 rue de Reuilly in the 12th arrondissement of Paris. In 1972 they moved to Vinneuf in Yonne, and in 1978 they settled in Marsillargues (Hérault), opening a sales gallery in Lunel. From 1956, they exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs, where the novelty of their production earned them great success. In 1958, they exhibited in Paris at the La Demeure gallery and at the Salon des Métiers d'art. In 1963 they participated in the French art workshops fair at the Maison de la Chimie in Paris, as well as in the craft fair. In 1970, the Mitsukoshi department stores, with which they had collaborated since 1967, invited them to Tokyo to show their know-how. The materials they work with are varied: ceramics, glazed earthenware, porcelain, terracotta, stoneware, plaster. Inspired by Georges Jouve and Marie Vassilieff, their work is most often utilitarian and decorative: dishes, pots, vases, lamps, ashtrays, storage compartments, interior architectural elements (claustra walls, enameled tiles, tables... ). Towards the end of their career, it moved more in a decorative direction.
