born in Udine on January 20, 1663 and died in Venice on February 12, 1730, is an architect, mathematician, engraver and above all a baroque painter of vedute considered as the initiator in Venice of the vedutism. He devotes himself to the painting of Venetian urban views, whose very meticulous rendering owes much to the use of the camera obscura. Its formula combines a wide perspective, featuring some characteristic monuments of Venice, animated by many small typical figures, all painted with a clear and bright chromaticism. His works were considered by many to be patriotic, as Carlevarijs had won the favor and patronage of the inhabitants of Venice. Carlevarijs documented many diplomatic scenes such as the arrival of dignitaries in Venice who were usually greeted with celebrations made in their honor.
