Originally from Perigueux, where he was initially a grocer in his father's shop, the young Georges Goursat began by collaborating with a local weekly before leaving for Bordeaux, then to Marseille, where he met the writer Jean Lorrain, who took him to the capital. It was there that he quickly became famous under the pseudonym of Sem. Sem thus occupies the difficult position of chronicler of the All-Paris 1900; He regularly collaborated with Le Figaro and La Vedette, the Marseille newspaper. One finds it where the worldly personalities of this era come together: Maxim's, Longchamp, Deauville, circles and casinos, his sketchbook in his hand. By 1910, Sem had begun writing a few stories. As soon as the journalists were admitted into the armed zone, in 1915, Sem was one of the first to leave. He brought back from the front of the illustrated articles, later united in two volumes - A Pekin on the Front, 1917; La Ronde de nuit, 1925 - of which it is surprising that they have not been reprinted. Of his models, many of which fell on the front line, Sem had perhaps learned the reserve, one of the finest qualities of the conquering bourgeois. (Cf website encyclopedia Universalis).
