Is an anarchist artist, painter, engraver, illustrator, poster artist and Swiss sculptor, naturalized French in 1901.
He studied letters at the Academy of Lausanne and studied at a textile printer in Mulhouse. In 1878, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen went to live in Paris where he first gained life as an industrial designer. In 1883, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen moved to Montmartre, an artists' quarter, where he became acquainted and became friends with artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Aristide Bruant, Vallotton and Alphonse Allais. Steinlen collaborated in this period as draftsman and illustrator in the newspapers "Le Chat noir" and "Le Mirliton". His first exhibition took place in 1884, at the Bodinière. It was in 1885 that Théophile Alexandre Steinlen drew the first of his famous posters: a poster for the Hotel de Paris in Trouville sur Mer, followed by posters for the Compagnie française, the cabaret "Le Chat noir" 'other. In 1911, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen founded Les Humoristes with Forain et Léandre and also produced illustrations for books. From 1893, he exhibited his works at the Salon des Independants, later also regularly at the Salon des humoristes. His political conviction led him to draw many posters against the First World War. Théophile Alexandre Steinlen died in 1923 in Paris. (Cf site register arts)
