Italian Catholic religious, founder of the Order of Friars Minor (commonly called Franciscan Order) characterized by prayer, poverty, evangelization and respect for creation. He was canonized in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and celebrated on October 4 in the Catholic liturgical calendar. One day while listening to a passage of the Gospel, he has an answer to what he seeks: to spend his life loving all creation. He transforms his life, becomes poor, cares to announce the messages of joy, hope and love contained in the Bible, and to bring peace to people and to all creation. He dresses in a gray garment and is surrounded by the size of a cord. He wears the garment of the poor man of his time. He is often represented in iconography as receiving the stigmata of Christ.
