also known as Our Lady of Vladimir, Virgin of Vladimir or Vladimirskaya, is one of Russia's most revered Orthodox icons. The Mother of God (in Greek Theotokos), the Virgin Mary, is considered the patron saint of Russia. The icon is on display in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow (St. Nicholas of Tolmatchi Church annexed to the museum). His feast day is June 3. Even more than the more famous icons, the original has been copied many times over the centuries, and many copies have acquired considerable artistic and religious significance. The icon is a version of the Eleusa type (Virgin of "Tenderness"), carrying the Child Jesus snuggled against the maternal cheek. The Mother bows her face to the Child, who raises an anxious face towards her.
