Rare Russian Orthodox icon, oil on panel covered with a solid silver riza* (Moscow hallmark 1792), representing the scene of the Ascension of Christ, this one in heaven standing in glory, surrounded by two angels; below The Virgin Mary with folded hands, accompanied by the apostles, from the end of the 18th century.

This icon is in good overall condition. Moscow hallmark (St George slaying the dragon) trustee hallmark in a heart date 1792. On the back of the panel, handwritten inscriptions in Cyrillic seem to give details on the different holders of the icon in the 19th century (1st paragraph dated 1845 or 49; second paragraph 1880).

Note: some slight accidents on the oclade (around the perimeter), scratches and wear from time, look carefully at the photos.

* The “oclades”

or metal cover can be in sculpted silver, inlaid with enamels or even pearls, and are used for icons which allowed a miracle. There are several kinds of oclade: the “Basma” which only covers the frame of the object. And the “Riza” which covers the bottom of the icon and leaves only the bodies of the characters visible.
