* Saint Barbara, Virgin and martyr ( 235), or Barbara, illustrious martyr of Nicomedia whose cult was widespread from the 5th century both in the East and in the West.
His life is above all made up of traditions, if not legends. His executioner would have been struck by lightning, hence the origin of the popular devotion which invokes him against the dangers of sudden death caused by fire or electricity. Attributes: a tower (three windows) in the hand, ciborium and host, or cannon and barrels of powder. Patron saint of artillerymen, artificers, miners and firefighters. The mystery of the martyrdom of Saint Barbara "Ar Meneg eus santez Barba" written in Breton by missionaries in pagan land in 1557 is at the origin of the popularity of this adolescent saint in Brittany.
