Gorgeous silver bronze sculpture representing the Apostle Jacques * Zebedee in pilgrim clothes into the shell of the pilgrimage of Saint Jacques de Compostela and a gourd, signed H. Monsalier, red marble base, period late nineteenth century.

 

This sculpture is in good condition. It is signed near the feet.

A note: some small chips on the marble, silver slight wear in places, see photos.

* Jacques or Jacques Zebedee Maggiore or St. Jacques

is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He is the brother of the apostle John of Zebedee. Saint Jacques is one of the first disciples to follow Jesus, and it is one of his closest. He participates with Peter and John, to important events: resurrection of the daughter of Jairus, Transfiguration, Jesus' prayer on the Mount of Olives. Great evangelist, he continued his journey by heading Compostela Galicia. He was beheaded and his execution provoked a popular uprising. The disciples recuperated body and embarked to Spain, where he was buried in the palace of Queen Lupa, newly converted. It was only later that the body was transferred to Compostela. The pilgrimage of Saint Jacques de Compostela developed in the Middle Ages from the announcement of the discovery of a tomb that was assigned. The apostle is often depicted as a pilgrim with corresponding attributes: the shell of the pilgrimage, the calabash (gourd), the mantle (cloak), the bag and stick pilgrim.
