Virgin Sicilian martyred in Syracuse, in 304 under Diocletian. She had made the pilgrimage to Catania on the grave of St. Agatha; after healing of the mother, she distributed all his wealth to the poor. Denounced as a Christian by her fiancé, she had throat pierced by a sword. His cult was introduced to Rome from the sixth century. Around 1000, the relics of the Saint are made in Lorraine by Thierry, bishop of Metz. Iconography: St Lucia has three kinds of attributes: the sword of his martyrdom; two eyes on a tray; a single palm. (from "Big Book of Saints Worship and iconography in the West" by Jacques Baudoin).
