Wooden chocolate cutter (for making chocolate shavings*), lever knife profiling a stylized character, turned wooden handle, work of Popular Art from the 18th century.

This chocolate cutter is in good overall condition. The blade is signed.

Please note: slight traces of oxidation on the iron, cracks and age-related accidents on the wood, wear and tear, see photos.

* During the Ancien Régime, cocoa was mainly consumed in the form of hot chocolate. Cocoa paste was prepared with the beans. Then, cane sugar and spices were added, before the paste was pressed into wooden or tin molds. Chocolate bars came out of these molds, which were then cut into large shavings. These shavings were then left to melt in water (or milk) in a chocolate maker, before being frothed using a whisk. The hot chocolate was then ready to be enjoyed. Chocolate was thus a very thick beverage, which was generally accompanied by a glass of water…
