Very nice set of 4 drawings Théodore Gudin * representing the interior of a mosque, the explosion of the fort of the Emperor, and a prison camp, Algeria, XIXth century.

This drawing comes from a set of 4 complete notebooks of the painter. They are not signed but come from the studio of Théodore Gudin, many drawings are besides annotated by his hand.


The drawings of these notebooks are made in pencil, charcoal or ink. They are glued to a sheet of paper (which can be slightly torn, chipped or stained see photos). Please look at the photos before buying.

Born on August 15, 1802 in Paris Died on April 12, 1880. Gudin was the first painter to have been appointed official painter of the navy in 1830. Gudin passed the entrance examinations at the naval school. But he entered the navy American and was embarked on the brig Manchester. In the USA, he met exiled Bonapartists, participated in a fisheries monitoring mission in Newfoundland and witnessed terrible shipwrecks. Back in France he finds his brother student of HoraceVernet who leads him to maritime painting. New drama the death of his brother.However he continues. Success came quickly. He opens a workshop, pupils follow his teaching. In 1827 great success with "the burning of the Kent". Charles X commanded him in 1828 a painting "the death of the sign of ship Bisson". A friend of Dupetit-Thouars, he was appointed painter of the Royal Navy and took part in the Algiers expedition. Under Louis Philippe, he was appointed baron and commissioned him 90 paintings destined to commemorate to the museum of Versailles the memory of the episodes of our naval history. Gudin travels in Italy, in Russia he realizes sketches of Russian naval maneuvers. He returns to France on "La Danaé". In 1844, he married the daughter of a Lord, goddaughter of Louis-Philippe. The revolution of 1848 arrived. He then shared his life between France and England. He maintained good relations with all the political powers. During the 1852 coup d'état, Gudin helped the Republicans. Gudin accompanies Emperor Napoleon III in Algeria, then returns to Tangier on "Queen Hortense". Gudin founded the Central Society for the Rescue of the Castaways. In 1870 Gudin is in England. Gudin gently falls into oblivion, only his pupil Morel-Fatio is known.
