Pair of screens or hand-facing fans, in painted silk decorated with herons or cranes in marshy landscapes, signed W. Mussil *, gilt wood frame, vintage late 19th century.

Painter and designer, he was born near Carslbad in Austria and studied painting in Paris. After working in Sèvres, he came to England in 1870 to work for Minton. He specialized in large compositions, making sketches from life of landscapes, birds and flowers. He painted in a free style under the glaze in a bold impasto, or Barbotine style. He executed a number of special orders for royalty and some of his designs were used for decorative tiles. (Cf website British Museum)
