* The lectern is a small piece of furniture for reading or writing a book conveniently. It is particularly useful if the book is valuable or bulky and of course it can not be held by hand (for example during a religious ceremony).
Speaking Switzerland and Canada, the word lectern is also commonly used to designate a desk bearing a musical score. The word comes from Martin Luther who, during his sermon, used a large oak desk.
