* The Neapolitan gouaches aroused the interest of tourists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, eager to return home with images and memories of their trip. The gouache remained the prerogative of Naples, one of the most important cities in Europe under the Bourbon and which was necessarily included in the itinerary of the Grand Tour of Italy, a trip complementary to the studies that were made by all distinguished Europeans. Anonymous most of the time and small formats to facilitate the transport, these works say minor and carried out in a traditional way have made the delights of generations of tourists. Vesuvius day or night, erupting and the Bay of Naples are the themes we find most often. Those dealing with erupted Vesuvius were often framed by a black margin where the artist indicated the year and the day of the eruption represented. Many painters have devoted themselves to this pictorial genre. The production of Neapolitan gouaches will last more than a century, until the appearance of new techniques such as engraving reproduction, from 1840 and photography. (According to Ancient Look).

** Mount Vesuvius is an Italian volcano 1,281 meters high, bordering the Bay of Naples, east of the city. It is the only continental European volcano to have erupted in the last hundred years, even though it is currently dormant; its last eruption dates from 1944. It is the origin of the destruction of the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabies, buried on August 24, 79 under a rain of ashes and mud. It has erupted many other times over the past millennia and is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of its explosive trend and especially the large population that lives around it.
