* Castle Pfalzgrafenstein

is a castle (also known as the Pfalz) on the island of Falkenau on the Rhine near Kaub, Germany. Its keep, in the form of pentagonal tower, was erected in 1326-1327 by King Louis IV of Bavaria. Around the tower, a hexagonal defensive wall was built between 1338 and 1340. In 1477 Pfalzgrafenstein was used as a depot for the Count of Katzenelnbogen. Later, parts were added in 1607 and 1755, consisting of turrets, the bastion gun pointing upstream, and the characteristic baroque tower to plans by Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti. The castle was the tollgate function because it was used in conjunction with Gutenfels castle and the walled city of Kaub, on the right bank of the river. Unlike the vast majority of the Rhine castles, it has never been conquered or destroyed. The castle was acquired by Prussia in 1866. In 1946, the castle became the property of the Rhineland-Palatinate.
