* The Black Virgins are female effigies belonging to the iconography of the European Middle Ages. They generally include the Virgin Mary, but some of them also represent Sara black or St. Anne. They get their name from their dark color, often confined to the face and hands. Most of them are sculptures produced between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, but sometimes the Byzantine-style icons of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. We find among them many Virgin and Child. The majority of 450 to 500 identified is found in the western Mediterranean basin area of Romanesque art, with a significant concentration in the south of France where one counts 180. While museums remain, most Black Virgins are placed in churches and raise some important pilgrimages.
