* In Greek mythology, Amphitrite is a Nereid, daughter of Nereus and Doris (or Dione according to some late sources), wife of Poseidon. According to Homer, Amphitrite also gave birth to seals. She is also, for Aelian, the mother of dolphins. From his union with Poseidon was born the fish-tailed sea god Triton. This therefore makes her, through her son, the grandmother of Pallas as well as sometimes that of Scylla and the tritons. She is often represented accompanied by dolphins and newts, sometimes other Nereids, in scenes evoking a marine procession.
